Can I use Excel or spreadsheets for Making Tax Digital?

Last updated: 13 October 2026

In short: Yes, but only with bridging software that connects your spreadsheet to HMRC. The spreadsheet must hold your digital records, and data must flow digitally to HMRC without retyping. For most busy tradespeople, an app that records jobs as you go is less work.

How spreadsheets work with MTD

HMRC accepts spreadsheets as digital records. A bridging tool reads the totals and submits your quarterly update. Copy and pasting figures by hand between programs does not count as a digital link.

The downsides for trades

  • You still have to type every invoice and receipt in
  • Easy to break formulas or miss a category
  • No quotes, invoices or payment links built in

A simpler option

Fixxa creates the record the moment you send a quote or invoice by voice or WhatsApp, so there is no evening data entry session.
